How to Password Protect a Website Without False Security
Password protection for a website sounds simple. You add a password box, hide the page, and send your client the password. But real protection stops files before they reach an unauthorized browser. Weaker methods only look private. A visitor can still reach the content through the page source, a direct file URL, or a search result.
This applies to proposals, presentations, client demos, financial reports, and unfinished products. The Verizon 2025 Data Breach Investigations Report examined more than 22,000 incidents. It found that credential abuse was the most common initial attack vector (the first way in), at 22%. Credential abuse is the use of stolen or guessed login details.
This tutorial covers:
- What the access controls on Cloudflare Pages, Netlify, Vercel and GitHub Pages can and cannot do
- Server-side passwords on Apache and Nginx
- Email verification and expiring links
- A step-by-step setup for protected client work
The goal is practical privacy. Do not mistake a browser popup for strong security.
What Website Password Protection Really Means
With real protection, the server sends no content until the visitor passes an access check. If JavaScript only hides a page that the browser already received, the server already delivered the content.
A sound access layer protects all of these:
- HTML pages and document previews
- Images, PDFs, videos and downloadable files
- API endpoints that an interactive demo uses
- Related paths inside a protected folder
It cannot stop authorized visitors from taking screenshots, copying text, or saving allowed downloads. It controls entry. It is not digital rights management (technology that controls copying and use of files), and it cannot make recipients trustworthy.
| Control | What It Does | What It Does Not Do |
|---|---|---|
| Password gate | Restricts access to people with a shared secret | Identify which person used the secret |
| Email verification | Confirms control of an allowed inbox | Prove who is physically using that inbox |
noindex directive |
Asks search engines not to index a page | Block a person who knows the URL |
| File encryption | Protects file contents from anyone without the key | Create a convenient browser experience by itself |
Remember this rule. The server, the edge network, or the hosting platform must check access before it returns protected bytes. The edge network is the set of host servers near the visitor.
Compare Ways to Password Protect a Website
The right method depends on the content, the audience, and the host. It also depends on whether you need to know who visited. A temporary design preview needs less than a customer account portal.
| Approach | Best For | Main Benefit | Main Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosting-platform protection | Static previews and staging sites | Fast setup with little code | Features and plan requirements vary by host |
| HTTP Basic Authentication | Small sites on Apache, Nginx or Netlify | Simple server-side gate | Shared credentials and no visitor identity |
| Application login | Production apps and sensitive portals | Per-user access, revocation and audit records | Requires backend development and maintenance |
| Email verification or identity gateway | External reviewers and contractors | Access tied to an allowed address | Depends on inbox security and email delivery |
| Expiring signed URL | Temporary access to one file | Automatic expiration | Anyone holding the URL can use it until expiry |
| Document-sharing service | Proposals, decks and PDF reports | Password, expiry and viewing activity per link | Built for documents, not for full websites |
Amazon S3 supports presigned URLs (links that work for a limited time). If you create one in the S3 console, it lasts from one minute to 12 hours. If you create one through the CLI or the SDKs, it can last up to seven days. The AWS documentation also says that a URL made with temporary credentials expires when those credentials expire.
For decks and PDFs rather than websites, services such as DocSend and Papermark put each document behind a link with its own settings. The DocSend Spaces link settings include a password, an expiry date, and a download switch. On the Advanced plans, the settings also include email verification and allow lists.
For short-lived downloads, use expiring URLs. For a website that goes through several review rounds, use a password, email verification, or individual logins.
What Popular Static Hosts Offer
Today, most small sites and client previews live on a static host (a service that serves plain files). The built-in protection of these hosts differs more than people expect:
| Host | Shared password | Email or account login | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloudflare Pages | No built-in site password | Cloudflare Access with an email one-time PIN or your identity provider | The Pages Enable access policy toggle protects only preview deployments. Production and custom domains need their own Access setup |
| Netlify | Password protection on Pro plans and higher, not on Free or Personal | Private projects or team login, limited to your Netlify team | Choose whether the password covers production and previews or previews only |
| Vercel | Password Protection, a paid add-on on Pro, included on Enterprise, not available on Hobby | Vercel Authentication, on all plans, for your team and Vercel users you grant access | Shareable Links let in anyone who has the link. Revoke them when a review ends |
| GitHub Pages | None | Private sites only on GitHub Enterprise Cloud, for people with read access to the repository | A Pages site is public on the internet even when its repository is private |
Each of these controls checks access at the edge of the platform, before the platform serves files. That is the property that you want. Separate how-to guides cover Netlify, Vercel and Cloudflare Pages with Access screen by screen.
How to Password Protect a Static Website
A static website contains files such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and images. It has no application server that checks passwords. So it needs protection from the hosting platform or from another service in front of it.
-
Use the access controls of the host. Pick one from the table above. For example, Vercel documents Deployment Protection with two choices. Standard Protection covers every deployment except production domains. All Deployments also covers production.
-
Put an identity gateway in front of the site. An identity gateway is a service that asks who the visitor is. A gateway such as Cloudflare Access can require a company login or an emailed one-time code before it forwards requests. This method works well for agencies that share previews with outside reviewers.
-
Use edge middleware or a serverless function (small code that runs on the host for each request). The function checks credentials before it returns static files. Protect every route and asset, not only
/index.html. -
Use signed URLs (links that work for a limited time) for isolated files. Set a short lifetime. Keep the link out of public logs, analytics parameters, and searchable pages.
Do not rely on a client-side JavaScript prompt. The browser receives the password, its hash, or the code that checks it. So visitors can inspect it. Also, direct file paths can skip the prompt completely.
An agency that shares a new homepage design can put the whole preview behind the protection of its host. This is far safer than a password modal (a popup box) in the code.
Server-Side Website Password Protection for Pages and Assets
Apache, Nginx, or an application backend can reject unauthorized requests before they serve anything. HTTP Basic Authentication is often enough for temporary, low-risk previews. With HTTP Basic Authentication, the browser asks for a user name and a password.
Here is an example Nginx configuration:
location /client-preview/ {
auth_basic "Client preview";
auth_basic_user_file /etc/nginx/.htpasswd;
}
The Nginx module documentation explains how auth_basic and auth_basic_user_file restrict a location. Apache has a similar workflow with htpasswd. Its official guide says to keep the password file outside the web-accessible directory.
On Netlify, a Basic-Auth rule in the _headers file gives the same kind of prompt. The Netlify basic authentication docs list this feature for Pro and Enterprise plans:
/client-preview/*
Basic-Auth: reviewer:a-long-random-password
Keep the repository private, and use a password that you use nowhere else. This rule stores the password in plain text in your site files.
For a safe setup, do these steps:
- Enable HTTPS before you accept any credentials.
- Create a hashed password record (the password in a one-way coded form). If the server supports bcrypt, use bcrypt.
- Apply authentication to pages, assets, downloads and API routes.
- Add rate limits (a maximum number of attempts in a time period). Review the failed-login records.
- Test direct file URLs in a private browser window.
Basic Authentication sends Base64-encoded credentials, and anyone can decode them. So Basic Authentication depends on TLS, the encryption behind HTTPS. MDN’s HTTP authentication guide says that the scheme is widely supported but not secure without HTTPS.
For production portals, use individual accounts. Then you can remove the access of one client, and nobody else loses access. Accounts also support multifactor authentication, roles, recovery, and meaningful audit records.
Use Email Verification When Identity Matters
A shared password asks whether the visitor knows the secret. Email verification asks whether the visitor can receive a message at an approved address.
The flow has five steps:
- The visitor enters an email address.
- The service checks the address or domain against an access policy.
- The service sends a short-lived, single-use code or link.
- The visitor uses the code or the link before the protected content loads.
- The service records the verified address with the sign-in.
Cloudflare Access is a common example. Its one-time PIN documentation gives three rules. Each PIN works once. A new request cancels the old PIN. The code expires 10 minutes after the request. If the policy does not allow an address, that address receives no email at all.
Email verification suits a consultant who shares a board report with six named directors. Each director uses their own inbox, so nobody needs a shared password. The consultant can remove one address, and the others keep their access.
This method has limits. A forwarded link can let someone else in. Shared or compromised inboxes make the check weaker. Corporate email scanners sometimes open single-use links before the recipient does. Use short expiration periods, allow lists, revocation, and clear recovery instructions.
A plain email form can record a lead (a possible customer). But it cannot prove that the visitor controls the address. Do not describe simple email collection as authentication.
Step by Step: Protect a Client Preview With Cloudflare Pages and Access
This setup gives each named reviewer their own sign-in. It works for any static site, and it keeps one stable URL through every revision.
- Deploy the site. In the Cloudflare dashboard, open Workers & Pages. Select Create application > Get started > Drag and drop your files. Name the project and upload the site folder (direct upload guide). The site appears at
<project>.pages.dev. - Turn on email codes. Go to Zero Trust > Integrations > Identity providers. Select Add new identity provider and choose One-time PIN.
- Protect the previews. In the Pages project, go to Settings > General. Select Enable access policy.
- Protect the production address. Follow the Cloudflare steps for the pages.dev domain. Edit the Access application that the toggle created. Remove the wildcard from its subdomain so that it covers
<project>.pages.dev. Save the application. Then enable the Pages access policy again so that the previews stay protected. - Name the reviewers. In the Allow policy of the application, add an Include rule. For named people, use the Emails selector. For everyone at the domain of the client, use Emails ending in.
- Cover any custom domain. Create a separate self-hosted Access application for it. If you do not, the custom domain is a second, unprotected route to the same files.
- Test the site while you are signed out. Open the site in a private window. Try an approved address and an unapproved one. Then paste the direct URL of an image or a PDF from the site. Make sure that it also asks for a sign-in.
- Send the link. Tell the reviewers that the site will ask for their email and a code. No password goes with the link.
- Review who signed in. Access keeps authentication logs with the email, the time, and the result of each attempt. In the Zero Trust dashboard, the logs are under Access authentication logs (log documentation).
- Update the site in place. In the Pages project, upload revisions with Create a new deployment. The address and the Access policy stay the same.
- When the work ends, close access. Remove the reviewers from the policy, or take the project down.
If one shared password suits the group better, use a host password. On Netlify, set password protection (Pro plan or higher) under Project configuration > General > Visitor access. On Vercel, add Password Protection from the Deployment Protection settings of the project.
Website Password Protection Best Practices
The gate is only one part. The choice of password, its delivery, caching (stored copies of responses), and removal also decide how private the content stays.
The current NIST Digital Identity Guidelines require at least 15 characters for a password that is the only login factor. The guidelines also call for these practices:
- Permit at least 64 characters.
- Block common and compromised passwords.
- Limit failed attempts.
- Do not force routine password changes.
Shared website passwords differ from personal account passwords. But these rules are still a sound benchmark.
| Item | What to Do | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Password | Use a long, random, project-specific value | Reuse can expose several clients at once |
| Transport | Force HTTPS on every protected route | HTTP can expose credentials and sessions |
| Coverage | Test pages, assets, APIs and downloads | One public asset can reveal the deliverable |
| Every hostname | Test the custom domain, the host’s default domain and preview URLs | A protected custom domain does not protect pages.dev, netlify.app or vercel.app addresses |
| Caching | Mark sensitive responses private or no-store | Shared caches can keep protected content |
| Attempts | Rate-limit failed access requests | Slows automated password guessing |
| Sharing | Send the link and the secret through separate channels | Then one leaked message does not reveal both |
| Removal | Revoke access when the engagement ends | Old links are easy to forget |
Keep passwords out of URLs. URLs end up in browser history, server logs, referrer data, screenshots, and copied messages. Before you publish, remove private data, API credentials, source maps, and internal comments from the static files. Source maps are files that map built code back to the source. A password gate cannot fix embedded secrets. When a visitor is in, the visitor can see everything in the files.
Sensitive-Data Limits
A shared password is not always enough for health records, payment information, legal evidence, or other regulated data. Follow the rules that apply to you. Use a service that is designed for that class of data.
Final Thoughts
The safest approach stops protected files before they reach an unauthorized browser. Hosting controls and HTTP Basic Authentication suit temporary previews. Email verification or individual accounts tell you who entered. They also let you remove one person at a time. Expiring signed links suit short-lived file delivery.
For client-facing work, choose by workflow:
- For production applications, use server-side authentication with individual accounts.
- For static sites and previews, use Cloudflare Access, Netlify password protection, or Vercel Deployment Protection.
- For a PDF or a deck that needs per-link settings, use a document-sharing service such as DocSend or Papermark.
With every method, test the direct asset URLs and every hostname. Use HTTPS, and keep passwords out of the page code. When the work ends, remove access. A few minutes of tests before you share are better than an explanation for an exposed proposal later.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a password stop search indexing?
A server-side gate normally keeps content away from search engine crawlers, because the crawlers cannot pass it. Add noindex only as a second precaution. If the page was public before, request removal of the cached search result after you enable protection.
What should I do if a shared website password is exposed?
Replace the password immediately. If the host allows it, end the active sessions. Examine the access records for unusual activity. Send the new password through a different channel from the link. If you need to remove one person and keep access for the others, consider per-person access.
Can cached copies stay reachable after I enable protection?
Yes. Content that was public can stay in browser, CDN, proxy, or search-engine caches. Purge the caches that you control. Send private or no-store headers for sensitive responses. Request removal of indexed pages.
